This is my first ever post in reply to your first bolete (I have been a mycophile for a couple of years though)
It's very much like one i found this time last year - a distinctive "stick of rhubarb" stem, a pinkish cracked cap showing pale yellow through the cracks,
with snuff brown spores - they don't get much bigger than 10cm across
I would agree with Chris that its a b.chrysenteron or red cracking bolete.
hope my first reply doesn't get shot down in flames guys
new boy

I certainly will not shoot you down in flames it could well be X chrysenteron but the cap especially the edges look too red for me and that is why I would still stick with X rubellus.

| | | Re: My first Bolete I think. Well that one went mouldy very quickly and the postman has trodden on the other (much better) examply...so now it is boletus trainersoleus
Thanks guys for your help. I'm leaning toward B.chrysenteron myself, in the flesh it's not as red as it seems to be in the photo...except on the stem, even though the photo was done in natural daylight without flash, but I'll list it as an either-or | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
