| | More help with Fungi please. Thanks for your replies last time - I am finding it all very useful. Whilst I am not too bad with some genus . I still get lost with little brown fungi. Can you help? All growing in woodland and associated grassland.
The first three all have umbo, is this usually a distinguishing chareteristic?
1. I am guessing a paneoulus because of the mottlegills. Is the banding or umbo chareteristic?
2.Mycena gallericulata - I am guessing this is what galleried gills are like.
3. A collybia, possibly peronata, but much greasier top than ones I have seen?
4 Collybia peronata but very different from above, no unbo, older specimen
5.Two views of the same fungi, growing on wood
Thanks again,
Jane

Neither of us have helped Jane with her questions though...

the top one is indeed a Panaeolus but it then becomes tricky - again the dreaded " m"icroscope word you need to check spore size and characters of the cystidia (specialised cells on gill faces and edges)
and third is, as Nick says, Marasmius oreades; image size does make the task very difficult with the remainder . . . .
when you mention "galleried" gills, I assume you mean with interveining at their base, where they meet the cap?; that is a variable character and not diagnostic in itself for Mycena galericulata - there is also an implication that you think the epithet ' galericulata' refers to this gill feature? (I may be wrong, here); but in fact it comes from the Latin word galerum meaning a hood, skull-cap or similar - more correctly from the diminutive galericulum meaning a small hood, skull-cap *, etc.
best I can do
Chris * as in the plant 'common skullcap' Scutellaria galericulata
