| | | Help with Stropharia confirmation please I found a group of these growing in rough grass path near a vegetable garden. Can any one help with ID. I thought it might be Stropharia sp. The spore print was purple brown.
Many thanks

Chris PS was this in East Yorkshire? - there are only two records for this species in VC 61: one in the Harpham area, and the other near Brid
if it was, could you PM me the details please?

no confirmation needed here - that is definitely Stropharia coronilla - and yes that ring is diagnostic, as well as the general look of the fungus
thanks for the details - please include the date and your full name for the records; will treat as confidential as regards WAB though
cheers
Chris

| | | Re: Help with Stropharia confirmation please These are abundant on our local allotments at the moment and yet I cannot recall seeing them before. I even found one several miles away on a farm track. Could it be caused by some combination of conditions, in particular we have had a severe rainfall deficit in this area, going back well into last winter.

Pete | hi Pete
I suspect that it is under-recorded; also it seems to be to some degree anthropogenic - "that's a lovely word isn't it everybody? we know a song about that don't we?" - seriously though, it means associated with humans and their activities - like your allotments . . . . I saw this species last weekend on a small area of mown amenity grassland near a playground; I've also found it at the edge of an arable field
allotments, mini-parks and arable fields are not classic foraying areas - most people head off to the nearest woodland or unimproved pastureland
I suspect that that - plus favourable conditions along the E of the county - look at Melanie's recent contributions/comments from the Scarborough area - are at work
Chris
