Oak Polypore - Piptoporus quercinus

Hello all

After a poor mornings start at Sherwood Pines Les and I decided to head for Sherwood Forest. This turned out to be a very productive foray which ended with Les finding the 'rare' Oak Polypore - Piptoporus quercinus on the heart wood of an ancient oak.



A good find made all the better by finding two more fruit bodies on another oak just metres away.

Given that Sherwood has about 1000 of these ancient oaks, there's a good chance that more are present.

PS we also visited Clumber on Saturday morning. It is producing lots of fungi at present!!

Wow nice find. You must be getting more rain up your way John, because its bone dry in my neck of the woods. I haven't seen much at all... or maybe I'm just not looking hard enough.

Yes, we have had a bit more rain up here and some places are certainly showing species in good numbers.
