| | strange amanita-looking species from Denmark Hello I live in Denmark and is a fungi-entusiast with some knownlegde of fungi - not enough to call me an expert though.
I've tried to get this spicies ID'ed by the local danish experts with no luck, so I think I give it a try here.
Date: Sept. 19th 2006
Location: Gaerum Hede, Frederikshavn, N. Jutland, Denmark
Size: Approx. the same dimension as a midsized Amanita rubescens
Ecologi: (Calcareous soil) under oak and beech in mix woodland
The free white gills, the ring and the cap are pointing in the direction of aminita or nearby species. But noone here has ever seen an amanita with that kind of flossy/shaggy stem |

Welcome to WAB.
Had a close look at your fungi and whilst the colour of the stem below the ring zone is unusual I can't find anything in the photograph to suggest that it is not Amanita rubescens. There is a yellow flush to the cap whilst not always present it is not uncommon. The membanous ring is flushed cap colour below.Likewise the stem below the ring zone is concolorous with the cap, colour in this instance though an orange/brown colour as opposed to the usual red.
Can't speak for Denmark but certainly the weather this season in the UK has thrown up a number of unusual variations that have got us delving into the text books.

99% (...to 100%) Amanita rubescens. I've seen this shaggy stem before, though not so intensely and densely coloured. |

Both Amanita rubescens/ pseudorubescens/ novinupta group and Cystoderma fallax group are extensively described in 'Mushrooms Demystified' by David Arora. Both are common in Europe. |

| | | Re: strange amanita-looking species from Denmark I think the problem here is that we could possibly be dealing with a genus or species not native to the UK and trying to compare it with genus and species familiar to us.
Cystoderma certainly has a granular stem below the ring zone but from this photo I detect evidence of warty velor remnants on the cap which for me would rule out Cystoderma and point towards Amanita.
There are 9 species of Csytoderma on the UK checklist with the exception of one they are fairly rare and majority are found with conifers. Just as a point of interest C.fallax is I believe native to North America.

| | | Re: strange amanita-looking species from Denmark Cystoderma fallax is more than well documented in Europe.
Many Cystoderma are typified by easily removable cap covering which is basically in this case just a continuation of the the dense covering of the stem below the PV . . As in this case veiw the stem below the PV which is densely granular floccose/ tufted/ scaly(veiw side veiw of stem of mushroom on left) The dense covering on the cap has become patchy and less dense as the cap expands. The degree of patchiness (size of the "warts" as in Amanita can be highly variable even within a species. The white velar piece on the cap of the shroom on the left from an appendiculate PV remnant that got blown up to the cap.
Don't have any of my refence available to me right now but just did a little looking on net and think I have a little closer match maybe with...
