| | | Piptoporus quercinus? This one is on a large oak in West Sussex, it was rock hard to the touch and certainly didn't seem at all like a Laetiporus.
If it is an oak polypore how serious is that for the oak, seeing as it's right next to a main road?
Any help appreciated

I am by no way an expert in the Oak Polypore having only found it once but your find looks the shiny orange brown surface of Ganoderma resinaceum (which I have never found ) but lets wait until someone comes along who has seen both

Mal | I think you are bang on with Ganoderma resinaceum. There is a fair bit emerging at the moment.

| | | Re: Piptoporus quercinus? Thanks Mal and Andy. I did find resinaceum once before in Essex but it was at a much later stage and I don't think I would ever have guessed that this was the same thing. Just out of interest, I've always assumed that Ganodermas are 'perennial' fungi that just keep growing new layers, is this one brand new or does it disappear in Winter?

| | | Re: Piptoporus quercinus? Some of the Ganoderma are perennial (australe, applanatum and resinaceum) others lucidum are annual. Even the perennial have to start sometime though.
