| | | Oak bracket fungus ID I quickly photographed this bracket the other day at Wakehurst Place, West Sussex thinking it was a young Dryad's-saddle. Now having looked at the photo it obviously isn't. Could it be Inonotus dryadeus?
It was on Pedunculate Oak ( Quercus robur).
Also what is the point of the liquid it is exuding and what would the liquid be?
Thanks

| | | Re: Oak bracket fungus ID Looks like the Beefsteak fungi Fistulina hepatica occasionally found on oaks. Can be red or salmon coloured.

| | | Re: Oak bracket fungus ID Thanks for the input. However, don't think it really looks like the Beefsteak Fungus, can't see any pictures that match the colour of the one I saw. |

Peter | Thanks Peter.
The 'bleeding' habit has quite fascinated me. I can't seem to find any explanation online.
I have discovered that searching for 'bleeding fungus' on Google Images brings up some scary pictures |

as I understand it the liquid is transported through the fruit-body by specialized thick-walled hyphae lacking cytoplasm (cell contents)
the liquid contains a range of amino-acids and proteins and has proven anti-bacterial qualities, which one assumes, helps the fungus in some way
cheers
Chris
