| | | More dryads saddles? Inspired by the stable-full of saddles appearing on here recently I went out for a quick scout. I got a couple of fairly sorry specimens but my wife is insistent I get confirmation from the wise heads at WaB before she gets out the frying pan. What do you reckon? (They were on a very rotten stump). |

WAB has a clear policy regarding requests regarding edibility of fungi, and members are encouraged both not to solicit, or respond to such requests.

Mike. |

Regards,
Mike. | No, I have read it. I assumed it was directed at the potential edibility of completely unidentified mushrooms. I know that dryads saddle is edible! I am just looking for i.d. confirmation and thus comfort for my fragile ego after my wife doubted my mycological knowledge. My apologies for causing offence. Had I not mentioned the frying pan would it have been OK?

In this instance it looks like your fungus is Dryad's Saddle, but there are a couple of similar looking fungi.

I don't think anyone other than an outright beginner would be likely to mix up the two, but it could happen.
Regards,
Mike. EDIT - Having said that, We found a large one on on an organised fungi foray last year, and the leader, with many years of experience was only able to confirm it as Polyporus tuberaster after he had later done the microscopy.
