| | Mushroom ID plse? I found this solitary mushroom yesterday in a grassy path behind my house. No woodland nearby - just grass verges.
As it was the only one I didn't want to pull it up to see the gills, sorry. It's approx 3cm in height and 2cm diameter
It's been suggesed to me that it's a Brown Mottlegill but I'm not too sure
Thanks

It won't do it any harm to pick it to photograph the gills. If you wish to do minimum disturbance to the natural order of things then leave it afterwards where it was then all the spores will distribute as they would have, but many would have already have been shed anyway. This fungus is just the fruiting body, the most important bit is the mycelium in the ground, so picking one is a bit like picking an apple from a tree, which doesn't harm the tree.
It looks like one of the mottlegills, though without a gill shot can't be absolutely certain, one of the Panaeolus or else Panaeolina foenisecii.

Many thanks for that. I'll toddle off later and take another shot after doing what you suggested-umm, as long as there's no chance of me getting caught in a torrential down pour and thunderstorm which sent me running home PDQ yesterday
Cheers

| | | Re: Mushroom ID plse? Melanie is spot-on I think, Panaeolus or Panaeolina foenisecii, but that may be as far as it goes with out the dreaded m-word, I fear
best wishes
Chris

eiona | They become magic when viewed under the microscope ..... Rather a lot of us are hooked on fungi, as you've probably gathered, and spend hours gazing down the 'scope at them, and further hours scratching our heads, all on top of the hours out in the field trying to find them in the first place. Strange behaviour, and that is without sampling them
