OT - But help appreciated!

I know this is Wild About Britain, but I'm really struggling in identifying these:
(and of course it's quite possible they are also found in Britain

)

Two fungi that I found whilst on holiday last year in Nova Scotia - I can't find anything similar in any of my books and I wonder anyone knows what they are.
They were about 7-8 inches tall, around 6 -8 inches in diameter and
velvety to the touch - early in the morning the yellow ringed edge was very prominent, but later in the day after it had rained they just seemed to be a very dark blue/black colour. They were growing on a fallen pine tree.

Thanks - I'm completly stumped, I've tried emailing various worthies but no-one has come up with any answers. I just wish I'd taken more notes & pictures at the time.
