| | | Fungi on the beach I though I would take a holiday away from mycology for two weeks, however while sitting on the beach on the island of Kos last week, under the shade of a Tamarix tree I happened to look up and there above my head was a fine specimen of Inonotus tamaricis. Most of the larger trees had fruit bodies at some stage of development.

Yes I was pleased, I brought a bit back, and found a key to Iranian and world species of Inonotus on the internet, and it keyed out quite easily.
I see I have miss spelt Tamarix (never mind)

| | | Re: Fungi on the beach Sounds as if you were lucky you did not have a branch complete with Inonotus drop on you ... Obviously health and safety is not such a priority in Greece ...
If you had wanted a mycology-free holiday you should have stayed in Britain North Yorkshire is devoid of fungi right now, well, almost .... After two days of looking I finally found a shrivelled Polyporus badius today.

Showing well the identifying feature of the sterile band between this and last years tubes
as well as the small spores.

Melanie | I am shocked at you Melanie - please say "big fungi" at least - get down to one of the many marshy, species-rich in your area, with a hand-lens and you will find a dozen species, no problem and that's just the start . . . on the 12th June the Yorkshire Naturalists' Union will have a meeting at Dalby Forest: I intend to go, so come along, if we don't find 50 or 60 species I would be very surprised
there has been a pleasing tendency for other groups beyond brackets and toadstools to put in an appearance on WAB in recent times - phrases like "devoid of fungi" will hardly encourage people to get out looking for them
best
Chris
