| | | Orange Birch Bolete I found an Orange Birch Bolete yesterday. What's that all about?
Is it normal to find things out of season? |

| | | Re: Orange Birch Bolete Although not as common as later in the year, I suspect this fungus is quite regularly found in spring. I have seen several times (though not this year) and noticed a picture by Cybershot a couple of weeks ago.
I found another early fruiting this morning, a bunch of about 6 amanita rubescens!

| | | Re: Orange Birch Bolete Although most popular guides and the WAB Gallery would indicate that this species generally tends to fruit in summer/autumn, Garry correctly noted that I found a single specimen by the pathside in Castle Bottom NNR, Hants on 1st May this year and Leif Goodwin did some background research of the databases to show that records of collections between April and June are not uncommon:

I often find species such Boletus luridiformis and Boletus radicans fairly early around August-Sept time. Also Leccinum crocopidium and L. duriusculum are possible early fruiters. But many of them could put in a freak appearance.

Mal | Hi Mal,
Yea, I haven't seen those species that early, its usually the Xerocomus that I see first, apart from one spot where L. duriusculum fruits fairly consistently during May-June. L. luridiformis, L. luridus and B. radicans do tend to be among the forerunners.
