| | | re: Fungi Newcomer ID please Very possibly Chlorophyllum brunneum, synonymous with Macrolepiota rhacodes var. hortensis, which grows on soil in nitrogen enriched habitat such as compost heaps and manured flowerbeds.
David

Dave | I agree with David. Most books on fungi/mushrooms will have this as the Shaggy or Wood Parasol. This is a relatively early fruiting for this species Dave.

| | | re: Fungi Newcomer ID please The lack of any references to this species on WAB, viz-a-viz either the Gallery or the A to Z, endorses the fact stated in the Checklist of the British & Irish Basidiomycota that it is "rarely reported or collected". Possibly, through unresolved confusion regarding varieties, most finds are recorded as Chlorophyllum rhacodes (syn. Macrolepiota rhacodes) - Shaggy Parasol. So, if possible, it would be good to get this find verified one way or the other.

David | Hi David,
DNA sequencing has been carried out on these 'varieties' and as you say Chlorophyllum brunneum is distinct from Chlorophyllum rhacodes. However the microscopic and macroscopic characteristics are unfortunately practically identical. C. brunneum is supposed to have an abruptly swollen base, marginate with distinct margin around the bulb but this varies between specimens. Habitats are supposed to vary, however I have found C. brunneum on nitrogen rich soil among flower beds and found the base of the stem to be just swollen, not marginate. I wouldn't rule out C. rhacodes turning up in similar habitats. So unless you are able to carry out DNA on your specimens its very difficult to tell them apart. The good old Shaggy Parasol.

In fact in the flesh it looks spectacular - pity it is in such a dark spot in the garden.
