reminiscent of Tubaria, though the habitat seems odd for that - what was it exactly?

My instinct was for Tubaria too. Most of the ones I find are in grass, rather like that but there's usually hawthorn close by, or occasionally another type of tree, and they are growing from buried twiglets or hawthorn berry kernels.

I found them growing on waste ground, though there is no hawthorn growing on the waste ground there are lots of birch and near the sea, and the soil is sandy. used to be part of marsh at one time, many years ago. is this a help.
