asparagus like spears, 5" long, 1/4" thick stems with a smal powdery head full of spores. Found in southport garden this week after 1 week away. overun fron patch of sunny, dry soil garden. Next to rose tree and 2 yuccas close proximity.
lots of spears grown up in last 2 weeks - overtaken soily area (dusty dry soil) |

Its not a fungus ,its a Horsetail.

yes indeed - Equisetum arvense . . . . but let's not get all judgemental here "Not something you want in the garden, it is a nightmare to get rid of! "
on a narrow level the above is true - but the last time I looked this site is called Wild About Britain: so celebrate the fact that this is a plant which was around (in much larger forms) in the Carboniferous period 300+ million years ago, becoming a major contributor to the coal that made this country a world leader (and I know that that was a potential problem in itself - but if we are all going to be truly green we wouldn't be on this site, wasting the earth's resources anyway)
also the non-chlorophyll / chlorophyllous stages of the lifestyle are very interesting - wish they did taste like asparagus, but . . . .
