| | | Fomes fomentarius on Birch Hello WAbers.
Came across these brackets yesterday.
Last one is on a different tree to the first three.
Have seen Fomes on Birch aplenty up in Scotland, and have Fomes hosted on turkey Oak & Beech here where I work in London.
But have until yesterday, not seen Fomes on Birch down here in the South.
Various literature has it that this occurance is rare at least.
Appreciate some context from others as to how far south the two combine?
Many thankls

David | Hi David,
Just to give you some perspective of Fomes fomentarius on Birch in Middlesex. I've been recording the fungi on Hampstead Heath, Epping Forest and Wimbledon Common now since 1996. I hadn't recorded F. fomentarius from any tree species other then Quercus cerris ( Turkey Oak) Q. robur and Fagus silvatica, until last year when I recorded it on Birch at Wimbledon Common. So I would therefore summise that it is not at all common on Birch here in the South. The further north you go the more common it becomes on Birch.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the feedback guys.
Andy,
fyi, this is on the southern wood edge of South Meadow.
Seems to me, that Fomes is certainly more abundant in the last few years.
Possibly due to the increase in managed standing dead wood here at KW & HH
regards

David | Hi David,
You are kidding me! How on earth have I missed that? I didn't recognize KW from the photo. Do you have an exact location for it?
It also occurs on a large Oak monolith, on the left as you come through Highgate Gate.
It is a species that has most certainly increased as a result of the standing dead wood but they are mostly on Oak. Good stuff David and many thanks for pointing it out. I'll be checking it out when I am back there on Friday.
Best

Yep, thats the one. Which David are you? Have I met you?
The Fomes on Birch doesn't look like its at KW I don't recognize the area in your picture, it looks more like Hampstead Heath heading toward Parliament Hill.

Andy | I'm David Tennant, no, no, I'm David Soul, no, no, I'm David Bellamy, no, no........I'm confused
I'm sure you'll find it on your walk on Friday, the map should help.
Had to advise today, why creating a kiddies net-climbing play area right on top of a Podocypha site (GHP) was not a very good idea.
Suffice to say, another site will be found for the little mamalians
Speak soon, have a good Easter.

| | | Re: Fomes fomentarius on Birch Would really appreciate a nod in the direction of contact info for culture-pairing and/or dna testing (Kew perhaps?)
Not something I have any experience in.
Would like to find out if there are any significant differences between the Fomes I have on the Birch & the ones which are on our Beech & Oak.
Many thanks
David

| | | Re: Fomes fomentarius on Birch Hi Dave,
I think you'll find that the Fomes across the heath, be it on Oak, Beech or Birch, is the same species mate, for geographical and climatic reasons pointed out in previous posts.
I might be wrong but I think you would find it difficult to have DNA tests carried out on them. Kew are up to their necks with virtually no personnel in the myco dept. You need to know someone, somewhere, nod nod, wink wink.
All the best
