Identification help appreciated as I can't find any references to striped Xylaria!

looks to me like x polymorpha with a white mould on it - the mould has dried and so cracked in appearance.
Thats my guess!

In the spring when Xylaria polymorpha first starts to develop it is a very pale colour and certainly has a white tip containing the spores. By summer it turns much darker and eventually black during autumn / winter.
Well worth checking again later if possible.
