| | | Morels 2010! So as I only recently got into wild fungi hunting (even though I worked in a fungal research lab for many years!) I have yet to find any morels. My interest in collecting wild fungi was really sparked by a book my GF got me at xmas. So I have been V frustrated that it was the wrong season to hunt fungi! I have found a few bits and bobs over the last few months but have been awaiting morel season excitidly. Now I have read the whole 2009 morel thread and was wondering peoples views on this year weather time of year location etc? I live in north manchester and it seems the soil in my area is acidic sandy and wet and I have a few woods nearby hopefully containing ash trees so what are my chances of finding some morels? Is it too early? I cant find any info on morels in manchester? I dont mean specific locations just if they have ever been found?? |

| | | Re: Morels 2010! Hi Paul and welcome to WAB
Morels are not all that common and people who do know where they can be found usually don’t like to tell too many other people in case it encourages indiscriminate picking.
As for when, the time of fruiting will depend on the weather. The best thing to do is keep looking at WAB forum. I am sure when some are found it will get posted, and when they appear in one place they are usually also in other places.

Hello Paul,
Morels are generally found on alkaline soils, if you know of any chalky areas, then that is where you need to be looking. Also keep an eye on large areas of mulch, especially flower beds, as they have been cropping up on this substrate for some years now. Within the next 2-4 weeks.
Good Luck

I suspect as soon as they are found people will be showing off their photos

| | | Re: Morels 2010! I'm about 45 mins drive south of Manchester and have been wondering the same as you paul; whether there are any morels and where I'd find them. Acidic soil here aswell (I'm just on the edge of the peak disctrict, the dark part) maybe if I go further south to the white part of the peak district (limestone) then the soil will become less acidic and chances of morels higher?
I'm not sure but I might give it a go... | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
