Found this fungi on a log in Bedford 21/3/2010. I can provide more detailed photos if required.

It's a Pleurotus species. |

Hello,
I'm not that sure about Pleurotus. And Pleurotus pulmonarius in March is strange and furthermore it should have a stipe and grow on beech.
My idea would be a Hohenbuehelia species, but just realized the pen in the foto. So THAT size it should be a Pleurotus .....

I would suspect Pleurotus cornucopiae though I would like to see the whole specimen still attached and from the underside  before being anything near certain
I'm not sure why the name P. pulmonarius keeps popping up on this and a number of similar past threads, Andreas' comments are spot on
I wonder if there is an identification guide out there with a mis-identified image on it . . .

Thanks for all your input. Much appreciated. I will keep investigating.
I've set a calendar reminder for this time next year, by which time I may be confident enough to eat some. There are at least 10 growths on the log, and they all look to be the same species. |
