| | | Another Brown One?
Hi All
Another one to get you guessing.
This was a small group growing near the base of a Beech tree. There were a number of very small ones emerging about 1cm dia.which caught my eye as they had very warty brown heads.
Cap dia.4cm, would describe colour as greyish brown.
Stem ht.3.5cm dia.1cm stuffed.Flesh white/cream
Gills off white, look to be distant.
No colour change on cutting or distinct odour.

It looks like Tricholoma Ustale. Commonly named the Matt Knight.
Wat you think mate?

Think you got your knights a bit mixed up, take it you mean Burnt Knight - Tricholoma ustale.
Given your suggestion, have perused all my reference books and searched the net etc. have to say T.ustale is the closest match I can find also. Being very young examples makes it a bit tricky.
Considered it might possibly be T.saponaceum but ruled this out as there was no distinctive odour.
Be useful to get some more views on this one.
Thanks

I'd rule out T. ustale. The cap colour is different and especially the stipe is nothing like that of T. ustale. Actually, the here stipe is rather typical of T. saponaceum, longitudinally dark fibrillose-squamose, with a reddish shade at the base. So I'll go for T. saponaceum. As for the smell, it's not unusual that it's absent or imperceivable. |

Think you are right and will go with my gut feeling that it is another very variable T.saponaceum. Had some doubts over the cap colour, T.ustale seems to be what I would call red-brown, where as this one appears more grey brown. Another factor is the gills, they look to me too be fairly distant, where T.ustale is described as crowded. Looking back at the photographs taken on the day I have a number of shots of older specimens of T.saponaceum which were close by and tend to be a a grey/brown cap and show the same stem detail.
Thanks
