I'll have a stab at Tubaria hiemalis for the second, because their look and habitat is similar to these, which I found recently: - Two for ID Help Please

I have the same opinion as Mike: Tubaria hiemalis.
The first one is an old Polyporus leptocephalus (= P. varius).
best regards,
Andreas

Andreas | surely Tubaria hiemalis is long gone as a good species, distinct from T. furfuracea? . . . . .

Chris | Hello Chris,
probably they are the same. I'm not too sure about it. I have the feeling that there are different ones in summer and in winter. But it's just a feeling, I have no clear distinctions, just some "here more, there less" ...
best regards,
Andreas

| | | Re: blackfoot polypore and mystery leaf litter mushroom Thanks Mike and Andreas for your opinions, and Chris for your comment!
I should start using latin names really, I just find them hard to remember.
I might have a look under the microscope at the 'Cheilocystidia' and take a couple of pictures.
This guy also sounds unsure about how to (or whether to) distiguish them: Tubaria |

| | | Re: blackfoot polypore and mystery leaf litter mushroom From the entry in the British Checklist for Tubaria furfuracea we get an endorsement for all the above commentary:
"Tubaria furfuracea (Pers.) Gillet, Hyménomycètes (Alençon): 538 (1874)
Agaricus furfuraceus Pers., Syn. meth. fung. (Göttingen) 2: 454 (1801)
Naucoria furfuracea (Pers.) P. Kumm., Führ. Pilzk. (Zwickau): 77 (1871)
Tubaria furfuracea (Pers.) Gillet, Hyménomycètes (Alençon): 538 (1874) var. furfuracea
Tubaria hiemalis Romagn. ex Bon, Doc. Mycol. 8(no. 8): 5 (1973)
Habitat: On wood (fallen twigs, sticks, woodchips etc.) in deciduous woodland, parks, and gardens.
Notes: Very common and widespread. T. hiemalis is sometimes considered a separate species, characterised by fruiting during the winter and by the more broadly capitate cheilocystidia and has been widely reported from Yorkshire southwards." |

not only seems to, but indeed IS unsure - the Tubaria confragosa is never ever this species, but also something from the furfuracea-group.
Tubaria confragosa has different colours and a well visible ring. It has a look a little bit similar to Armillariella ostoyae!
Here is a very typical picture, though the scales are not always that impressive: http://www.cegep-sept-iles.qc.ca/ray...confragosa.JPG
And another one, which is a little bit unusually reddish, but still in the colour range: http://mycologie.catalogne.free.fr/I...confragosa.jpg
best regards,
Andreas

| | | Re: blackfoot polypore and mystery leaf litter mushroom Found it difficult to look at this under the microscope...
I tried looking at the spore 'sprouting' edge of a singular gill but only a few structures there which were difficult to distinguish. I think I tried 400x, 200x and 50x although it may have been 100x instead of 200x.
Not really sure how to get the best results. I was seeing spores at 400x (with a different species of mushroom) so I assumed that was too far to go really if I am wanting to look at the Cheilocystidia?! |

| | | Re: blackfoot polypore and mystery leaf litter mushroom This is what you are looking for at a slightly higher magnification
At 400x magnification you should expect to see this (this photo is of strobilurus cystidia as I don't have any tubaria at 400x but they are a good guide to the size you should see )
