| | | Help with fungi ID please Being more of a birding type, I have little or no knowledge on fungi. I was out in the woods the other day and came across lots of these beautiful fungi growing on the ground and on dead trees. Please help with ID
Thanks,

It looks like Scarlet Elf-Cup Sarcoscypha coccinea, but I thought it was just a little too early for that...
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Help with fungi ID please The determination between Scarlet Elfcup species S. coccinea and S.austriaca depends on microscopically comparing spore and surface hyphae characteristics. A quick search of the Gallery will reveal images of maturing fruit bodies appearing from January onwards: The first emergent cups were spotted before the snow came in mid December in this neck of the woods and continue to display currently; a pattern also observed in the previous year: Winter approaches - Wild About The World
