Went out today to see if the Elf Cups were fruiting at a local site and they were. I also found this fungus amongst moss on a rotting stump
I was puzzled so took it home, but was unable to find any spores or hymenium. It appears to have developed pear shaped and then collapsed in on itself, so I think it must be a malformed and underdeveloped Lycoperdon pyriforme.

I think you must be viewing this from the wrong perspective to see this as being Jelly Ear.
It is definitely a 'pufball' and either L.perlatum or L.pyriforme and as Peter was looking on this 'hump' for 'Elf Cups' knowing there was burried wood underneath, then I would favour Peters suggestion of L.pyriforme.

No keep them on - at the speed you're travelling, you'll get fungal spores in your eyes.
