| | | Phellinus sp? Greetings one and all.
These two images have been forwarded to me, by a colleague in Yorkshire.
Would be appreciative of a nod toward the identification of the brackets.
I'm afraid these images are all I have, the conks are hosted here on Sycamore, and I presume the older desicated ones are possibly same species.
Many thanks

| | | Re: Phellinus sp? Looks like you have something good here, I would agree Phellinus, but the only one I can think it may be is the 'rare' P.nigricans which is happier with Birch.
Or it could be just P.igniarius.
Any bracket on Sycamore is likely to be interesting.

| | | Re: Phellinus sp? Thanks Neil,
do you know of any reference that gives a wider list of host for P. nigricans.
I've only ever come across P. igniarius on Salix.
Have you found it on other desiduous trees?

You could try the two national databases for fungi:
BMS Database
ABFG Database
In 'The Polyporacae of Northern Europe' (by Leif Ryvarden) he says "On deciduous trees of all sorts, except for Populus and Tillia on which it is rare"
