| | | Coprinus? Psathyrella? ID Help please I have been sorting through some photographs from last year and came across these two. They were taken growing in grass at Toby's Hill Nature reserve near Saltfleet, Lincolnshire which is part of the sand dune system on the coast. Cattle graze on this reserve.
Coprinus? Largest about 10cm tall and cap about 5cm
Psathyrella? Largest about 5cm tall with cap about 2cm across.
Sorry no other info - smell/taste etc.
Any help gratefully accepted.

| | | Re: Coprinus? Psathyrella? ID Help please Hello, your first is an Ink Cap, most likely one which has changed it's genus from Coprinus to Parasola. I'd be tempted to go for Parasola plicatilis, but the centre of the cap is wrong.
Your second seems to be a Panaeolus/Panaeolina species (Mottle Gill)

| | | Re: Coprinus? Psathyrella? ID Help please Thanks J.P and Neil - I wasn't expecting anything beyond genus because of the lack of information so thanks for the pointers.
Out of interest what was the reason for the change in genus?

| Hello,
the genus Coprinus has found to be polyphyletic, that means it consists of several group which are independent and form genera of their own. It is even so, that one of those genera belongs in the family Agaricaceae, the other three in another family which had to be named newly as Psathyrellaceae.
The genus name Coprinus stays with that group in which the type species of Coprinus belongs. Unfortunaltely this is Coprinus comatus, and the group in which Coprinus comatus belongs comprises only two species. So all other ex-Corpinus had to be combined to other generic names: Coprinellus, Coprinopsis and Parasola. All these species are closer related to Psathyrella as to Coprinus comatus!
best regards,
Andreas
