| | | The only way is.......up? Greetings fungal Overlords,
I would be indebted to you fine Regents of Mycoland, for a nod in the direction of this little oddity.
Here on Pinus sylvestris branches, recently severed (in the name of H&S) from a live tree at Burnham Beeches.
The branch it's on, is possibly no more than 60mm diameter.
The orientation (pores) are a puzzle, as the examples are (poorly) shot whilst underneath many branches within a stack of brash.
That's why I offer up my 2 examples, both ways.
Intriugiungly awaiting your ponderings
much obliged

| | | Re: The only way is.......up? Yes, it's payment up front now, I'm afraid to say.
Or it could be that no one has any idea.
This doesn't look like it will develop further in which case it will remain a mystery.
If it changes shape, take another shot and send it in.

| | | Re: The only way is.......up? I've only got Blood diamonds and Kugerrands at hand, will that suffice Neil ?
Appreciate the feedback & reply,
unfortunately I don't actually work at that site, and have a bad feeling the brash pile may have been chipped.
If it has been relocated and habitated, I will try to get someone over to see if there have been any developements.
Many thanks

Yes, this was unusual in that no one was even prepared to suggest a genus even.

| | | Re: The only way is.......up? I don't suppose it could be in anyway related to or the beginnings of what we call in Japan Yamabushitake or Hericium erinaceus. My offering was taken last September in Japan.
I know it's fully developed and my knowledge is extremely limited and I'm not aware if these things even grow in Britain but just trying to humbly add fuel to the dying embers of this thread.
But it also sounds like your specimen must have been quite small but i guess as someone stated somewhere 'from small things do indeed come greater things' or words to that effect... |

| | | Re: The only way is.......up? Hericium species are commonly called 'tooth fungi' and the spores are produced on the teeth or spines. This particular one H.erinaceus is a Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) species in UK due to it's vulnerability/rarity status. It usually grows on Fagus or other deciduous trees.
Our mystery fungi is 'poroid' and the spores are produced in the tiny holes shown. This is also growing on Pinus and is quite different.

| | | Re: The only way is.......up? Puts me in mind of a small patch of emergent, resupinate form of Datronia mollis, which apparently can rarely be found on conifers.

still haven't managed to track any one down to get a more developed shot yet. Though I have asked.
I'll get back here, if anything happens.
appreciate the feedback
Saw what looked like Perriniopora fraxinia on Fraxinus pennsylvania at Kew earlier today.
Didn't take me camera out with me though.......doh !
