| | | unknown fungi on birch for id please came across this in Clumber, which was being photographed by another chap, who said he had found it a couple of days before, and was still not sure what it was, so had come back for another look,
he said the only thing he could find that was anything like it was Gloeoporus dichrous, (not in any of my books, so had to look on the web for it ) but was no way certain of it,
having forgotten to put the memory card back into the camera, i was using the cameras memory which was about full, so only managed to get this one (poor) shot of it,
it was on a short section of a fallen birch tree, along with several others, one of which was a much lighter brown ,while some were very dark and seemed to be older ones and ranged from 30mm across to 80mm across, about 3 or 4mm at the thickest point in depth, very tiny round pores on the top, and it seemed to be attached by a central point to the wood ( not absolutely sure on this point though), no particular smell to it ,
the pics of Gloeoporus dichrous i found on the web varied very much , some looking a little like this one, while most looked nothing like it,
any suggestions ? |

| | | Re: unknown fungi on birch for id please Was there any tiny (pileate) brackets beginning to form where this was growing on a vertical surface ?
I suspect this will have to be microscope job.

Neil. | i did not see any signs of tiny brackets, just the larger ones,
i think i need to go back and get some better pictures(this time with card in camera ), being a bracket type it should still be around for a few days yet,
i searched for more info on Gloeoporus dichrous, but am even more uncertain now that this is what it is,
perhaps with better pics and more info, someone will be able to point me in the right direction with it,
thanks,

| | | Re: unknown fungi on birch for id please well, i braved the frost this morning and went back to clumber, and got some more pics of all the specimens on the log,
the log was a short section of birch, laying on the ground, it was very rotten inside,
they were tightly attached at the centre and pressed closely the birch,
although elswhere, as can be seen from the pics, some of the smaller ones seemed to be just attached at the centre,
hope this helps towards an id,
j.

| | | Re: unknown fungi on birch for id please I have absolutely no idea still, not sure if they are all the same fungi even, although the 'surface' seems to be the same.
Neil.
EDIT, Come on everybody else, Ashgale went back to Clumber in the frost just to get these extra pics, he deserves a better response.

| | | Re: unknown fungi on birch for id please OK, OK Neil! it might be cos we are struggling too!!
Something resupinate, but also with a cup, mmmmmhhh.
But really looks like two types to me.
I'm lost too, but let me do more thinking.
Cheers
Ken

| | | Re: unknown fungi on birch for id please Hello,
certainly the resupinate and the pileate forms belomg to the same species, at least that is my opinion.
I have no real convincing idea. The only thing that comes to my mind is, that it may be old fruitbodies of Bjerkandera fumosa?
best regards,
Andreas

| | | Re: unknown fungi on birch for id please many thanks for the input so far,
if it is of any help, pics 7&8 are of the small fruit body to the upper left in pics 2&6, which was photographed on the mossy path after removal from the log,
while trawling through the site for any old pics/posts that may have helped, i came across this post fungi on dead oak query.
could this be something similar ? although that one was on oak ?
i think mine will end up in my unknown folder (if i can find room for it )
the morning was not without a bit of good fortune, as i did find a nice group about fifty Sarcosycpha austriaca

| | | Re: unknown fungi on birch for id please Hi J.,
your fungus is a polypore and has pores, the fungus in the other thread is a steroid fungus and has a smooth surface without pores.
The two are so different as bolets and agarics.
best regards,
Andreas
