| | | Re: Vivid Red Mushroom - Unknown Hello MaN,
so with these additional pictures it is evident and 100% certain that those are Hygrocybe species. But it is not to tell with certainty which species. My first idea, H. coccinea, is certainly not. It would be necessary to know whether the stipe was glutinous or only a little bit greasy feeling. If first, it could well be H. glutinipes or H. ortoniana (if the two are separable ...). If the latter is true, it could be H. mucronella (very butter taste!) or H. insipida (the colours match perfectly). Ther emight be two or three more species which I don't think of at the moment which wuld come into account too.
The site where you found this one is interesting for other rare and endangered species, be it Hygrocybe or from such genera as Ramariopsis, Clavulinopsis, Camarophyllopsis, Camarophyllus and Entoloma.
Hope you don't show us pcitures from Japan without telling us that they are not from Europe, do you?
best regards,
Andreas

| | | Re: Vivid Red Mushroom - Unknown Hi Andreas - Much appreciation for your help by the way.
I'm not too sure about the Hygrocybe ortoniana after finding a few images due to their more yellowy/orange colour and lanky stipe along with what looks like smaller caps. The caps in my images are 2-3cm.
What interests me more is the H.conicoides or Dune Waxcaps but again there seems to be some discrepencies with the gills and colour of the cap on most images but these two images look very similar.
What do you think? http://www.glaucus.org.uk/DuneWaxcap8793.jpg Dune Waxcap (Hygrocybe conicoides) photo/image
Oh and I certainly would'nt show pictures of species that I knew only grew in Japan and not in Europe at least knowingly. I'm not here to play games but learn like lots of knowledgeable people using this site. |

| | | Re: Vivid Red Mushroom - Unknown Hello MaN,
Hygrocybe conicoides doesn't cames into question, because the group around H. conica s.l. as well as the group around H. persistens s.l. is characterized by their conical caps, which show a rather acute umbo when expanding. The cap shape of your fungi are not acute enough, not inocybe-like enough to belong in one of these two groups.
What concerns colour, the yellow-orange-red colour of several species varies a lot within one and the same collection. Besides that, there is a var. rubra of H. ortoniana, which is said to be entirely red, even more then yours. But I agree, that H. ortoniana/glutinipes doesn't look too good for your fungus. They have are more slender overall shape. Quote: |

| The origin would be interesting to know in any case when fungi from abroad are shown. Especially from Japan, as there are many many species which were baptised with european names, but I believe only a small percentage of them are really the same as our european species .... If you look at the book of IMAZEKI/HONGO, already mentioned in the thread about the yellow fungus, there are so many pcitures with european names, which look quite different from our european concept!
best regards,
Andreas
