"var. phalenarum differs in having a dentate or bordered cap margin and a ringless striate stem"
50 records in BMS database
Hope that is helpful
Peter

| | | Re: Panaeolus semiovatus var phalaenarum ? Other than its size it looks like P semiovatus so if var phalaenarum is a smaller version as described in Bon then it could very well be.

Many thanks for your helpful comments.
Mal, can I show novice's ignorance and ask what reference 'Bon' is?

| | | Re: Panaeolus semiovatus var phalaenarum ? Sorry Chris
It is one of the widely used guide books "Mushrooms and Toadstools of Britain and North-western Europe" by Marcel Bon therefore known as BON It is a good book and the new version is due out in 2006/7/8/9/10

No need to apologise, it was always going to be a basic question. It's apparently unavailable at present so I have ordered the latest "Collins Complete British Mushrooms and Toadstools" by Paul Sterry. Neil recommended this one to supplement my Jordan.

| | | Re: Panaeolus semiovatus var phalaenarum ? Of course, if you have lots of money to spend .......... Vols. 1,2,3,4,5 & 6 of Fungi of Switzerland, should still keep you happy for a good few years yet !
