| | | Re: Creolophus cirrhatus, confidant? The size of the brackets suggest the spines should be fully developed by now, yet I see none at all on the undersurface.
Those do appear to be spines on the edge of the bracket but seem very short and look nowhere near to being 10 mm (average) long, but these spines certainly rule out Rigidoporus ulmarius which immediately came to mind when I first saw the photo.
I have only seen C.cirrhatus once before, so have little experience of this species.
Can you tell us the tree species and the width of the bracket. Sharper photos would help also, but I guess you sent the best you have.

Neil. | I suspect its a forming bracket and also a bit nibbled (patches missing on underside) As for rigidiporus, you do realise I am a tree surgeon! the bracket was an open hand size maybe a bit bigger (i have big hands!) and as you can see in the close up there are spines on the underside. it is the right texture, colour and form, on beech which is a know substrate and most common one i think. Its only a limb more a branch as you can see and in an area well designated as ancient woodland.
I am 100% certain but you lot know more about these things than I

Yes, I know you're a tree surgeon, and a budding and enthusiastic mycologist too, and like the rest of us, prone to making mistakes.
At the moment you know more than us, as you have the specimen with you in the hand, so you may be right and it does sound like a young specimen still about to develop further - we will just have to wait and see, then hopefully you will send some more photos.

Neil. | I would NEVER remove an unrecognised or rare fungus, i love them FAR too much for that. so only when I come across this fungus again in this would can I do you some Clearer pics.
So given that it is spined, and tiered, and white going ochreous do you think it would be any other fungi? after all these are very narror hard to fail features dont you think, especialy on the given substrate! and location

You misunderstood me. When I say you have it 'in the hand' I mean you have seen it (it being 'available' to you) in the flesh - we haven't.
