I am using this enforced break from foraying to (try to) sort out my photos and came across this. It was on a birch tree with a traditional Fomes fomentarius a little higher up and I took the photo of this one without much real thought but it is such a pale surface I am now not sure what it actually is.
Can anyone help.

I think it has to be an unusually very pale Ganoderma australe or applanatum.
Can't think of it being anything else.

Hello,

why can't it be just Fomes like the others on the stem? I have often seen fruitbodies like this, and the brown margin is quite distinctive.

Although I have limited mycological experience, i do Know a spot where Fomes fomentarius proliferates and I have to agree that some very pale even white examples exist.
