You start by joining WAB as you have done .... welcome .
I know absolutely nothing about fungi other than those that I buy in Tescos for cooking but there are a few WABers who know a lot, not least FungiJohn.
Until he comes along take a look in the Gallery (the fungi section) and see if there are any there that you recognise or alternatively post photos of what you saw and ask in the forum for an ID.
Enjoy the website.

| | | Re: complete newbie Hi Sam and welcome to WAB.
This season has been very good in terms of the quality and quantity of fungi found.
Take a look at the fungi resource centre http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/british_fungi
There you will find much information to get you started. If you are really keen it may help to join a fungi related group in you're area. A quick google of fungi forays -- you're location -- should bring up some results.
A good book to purchase would be Roger Phillips - Mushrooms, about £11 on Amazon or you can use their website: Rogers Mushrooms | Mushroom Pictures & Mushroom Reference
Hope this helps

| | | Re: complete newbie Wey-hey!! Thanks for that link to Rogers Mushrooms, John. Maybe I won't need to keep bothering you all quite so much with all my "unidentifieds" now. Then again... |

Think it takes donkeys years of experience (sorry FungiJohn and others) and close up examination under a microscope to make a definite id in some cases.
FungiJohns made some id guidelines on Read Me First thread which I will certainly be sticking to.
Happy days

| | | Re: complete newbie Hi Babydaddy a very warm welcome to WAB.Fungi John got me started on photographing fungi.Have got loads of pics and 3 books to try to identify.I have found that it is very difficult even with the books as they can vary so much yet still be the same species. But this forum is a great place for help.Look forward to your photos and enjoy. There are so many very colourful fungi and it is fun to try to id them and also frustrating | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
