| | | Difference between Brick Cap and Tuft? Hi all,
Is there a difference between Brick Tuft and Brick caps?
Different places seem to list Caps as both H.sublateritium and H.lateritium and the same with Tuft?
Is it one of those instance where the name has been changed?
If there is a difference then which are these?
2 different samples but only about 100 yards apart.
Thanks

Brickcaps or tufts are the same. Hypholoma sublaterinum and laterinum are the same.
It seems 'caps' have been dropped for 'tufts' and sublaterinum has been dropped for plain old simple laterinum.
Don't ask why coz ah doont naw.
Now then, the exciting bit, what have you got there, because I don't know.
No 1 seems to be growing from soil, but is more likely to be on hidden wood, but whatever it is hasn't sunk in yet.
No 2 is different, it looks something like Rhodotus palmatus but the caps have scales not wrinkles so I would be tempted to place this in Pholiota, but I do not know of a Pholiota with caps this colour.
The floor is open to all comers !

Thanks for clearing the original question but it looks as tho ive open yet another can of worms!
They were both growing on the root side of fallen trees (but stump only not whole trees, obviously managed at some point) im no good with whole trees let alone stumps! |

| | | Re: Difference between Brick Cap and Tuft? Hello,
both collections are Hypholoma lateritium = Hypholoma sublateritium. Both names are in use for the same species: Brick Tuft or Brick Cap, as you like.
The change (back) to Hypholoma lateritiumis of nomenclatural reasons (older then sublateritium), but not supported by all mycologists (saying that lateritium is a doubious species - but which of the old names is not ... ).
best regards,
Andreas

| | | Re: Difference between Brick Cap and Tuft? Well that's really surprised me as Hypholoma lateritium is probably quite common, but I have never knowingly found it, and if it is as red as in your photo, I don't know how the heck I have never seen it.
(And yet you have found it and even had a good idea of what you have found)

Neil. | Yep it certainly is that red !
In the books i have it is said to be ' uncommon ' and not as common as the Sulphur Tuft,i got on the right tracks with the Pillips book which still has it as the Brick Cap (which brings us full circle ) | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
