| | | Garden finds There seems to be so much talk about the edibility lately I wondered if anyone could help with these finds in my garden. Two species I think but could be the same genus. Of course I am not willing to try them without expert confirmation from you lot out there.

| | | Re: Garden finds Can I suggest Humulus lupulus adepto madidus sp.
I have found several of these on recent Friday evening forays. I enjoy them, often with thinly sliced fried & seasoned potatoes, however it is rumoured that excessive consumption affects some with stomach complaints, possible vomiting and bowel loosening, leading to dehydration and headaches for as long as 24 hours later. |

| | | Re: Garden finds Depends how desperate you are. Might be a bit bitter though, if you are lucky. I'd suggest you should put your glasses on first. Personally I don't think they are worth bothering with. Too watery. An acquired taste.
In the old days its habitat was often in association with sawdust.

Neil. | Put your glasses on! You might then spot a drip or two. And then you need to do some microscopy of the drips to come to a firm id.

| | | Re: Garden finds I think some of you must have extra-special vision here (or perhaps you're already hallucinating???)
The picture on its own appears to show just a tantalising suggestion of the joys... as it stands I personally believe these have been removed from their natural habitat and strewn carelessly about on the grass - this constitutes littering which is an illegal activity and in no way to be encouraged.
I also think you will find the actual specimens as photographed to be somewhat lacking in flavour (unless pre-soaked in some form of fermented liquid with a scatteing of hops) and maybe a little chewy unless finely shredded or minced and stewed in a long, slow casserole. Even then you might prefer to eat cardboard! Still, I suppose you could always go down the pub while they're cooking!
Of course, in the old days, not only would they have been associated with sawdust as Sheffield Lass pointed out, but they would also have been steeped in tobacco smoke adding a certain something to the otherwise bland blend...
