Unidentified bolete - please help

Is this a Penny Bun? Found under a corridor of beech trees on Sunday but after getting home and looking carefully at the photo I noticed that, after clearing rubbish away from the stipe base, it had bruised blue. Is this symtamatic of the penny bun? or is it a different variety?

If it's not too late Steve, can you slice the thing in half and show us if the flesh in the stem and cap change colour (blue with possibly some reddening) and if so, how quickly ?

it's in a wood approx 10 miles away but I could go back and try to find it and cut in half as you suggest

Sorry, I forgot I went Sunday in a 'no go' area as the forestry commission are cutting down trees so I'll have to wait till next Sunday - that's if its still growing following the predicted frosts

Hello,

in think it will change colour immediately to a dark blue. In my opinion this is Boletus erythropus, in a somewhat pale specimen were the red pigmentation is absent (or reduced). This happens not too rarely.
