| | | odd little Amanita ? i found this at the beginning of October, on a soil covered stump in mainly beech woodland, there were about 3 of them, all around the same size and were growing among some Scleroderma citrinum, which they closely resembled at first glance, so i almost missed them, cap was about 35mm wide and about the same in height,
they had a quite distinct odour of raw potato, but do not look like the usual candidate that has this smell, although it does have other similar characteristics, they looked as fully developed as they were likely to get, and the sample i saved had turned into a soggy foul smelling mass after a couple of hours,
were my first instincts regarding the odour right with Amanita or not ?

| | | Re: odd little Amanita ? Probably more likely to be A. citrina than A. phalloides due to the scales/squamules showing on the pileus. Whatever it is, I doubt you'll get a positive identification due to the state of the thing |

| | | Re: odd little Amanita ? 'Superannuated' eh ? Not sure if we've had that word before to describe an old specimen, but Death Cap it certainly isn't and neither do they smell of raw potatoes.
I would go along with Nicks preference.

| | | Re: odd little Amanita ? A.citrina was my original thoughts on this one, it was the small size and the "scales" on the cap that made me wonder if it really was citrina,
on the other hand it had been very dry for quite a few weeks when this was found, together with its somewhat elevated position on top of an old stump which would have added to the already arid conditions that probably stunted its growth and gave the cap the appearance of having scales,
thanks for the comments,
