| | | unidentified bracket Hi again many thanks for comments on indentifying a pipe fungi, as this fungi watching is all new to me thought i would again enlist your help in hopefully identifying another, this time a bracket I found again in a decidious wood, it was growing on a very old stump ( I suspect was oak ) above some old fungi which I think were sulphur tuft. Ive tried to show an insert of the underside in my photo. The top side was a rich red colour brittle and shiny but with a layer of dust adhered to it. I would welcome any suggestions

| | | Re: unidentified bracket First thoughts are Ganoderma lucidum - were there any signs of a distorted burgundy/black, glossy stem attached to the underside ?

| | | Re: unidentified bracket Hi Neil thanks for your prompt response,Yes the shank was darkened from the red above to a dark burgundy underneath although not distorted, I'm glad that you have first suggested Ganoderma Lucidum as this was my original thoughs after consulting my ref. info. but I got the impression that it was quite rare and as a novice to this fungi lark thought it unlikely I had found an unusual one.

| | | Re: unidentified bracket I would class them as 'occasional' rather than rare, as despite being that nice shiny reddish colour, I'm sure most are overlooked.
Nice find all the same.

| | | Re: unidentified bracket this is one of those that pops up after a long absence me thinks, found it myself for the first time this year, but not in as good condition as this sample, G lucidum without doubt as you all suggest, what a corker, and if peter and nick want to find it i would advise seeking out very old oaks with basal dysfunction, also the substrate the asians grow it on in cultivation.

i see a visit there in the near future
