| | | Puffball, but which one? Found this in woodland in an area with about a dozen of them, about 6-8 inches across, quite a yellow/brown colour - possibly just a common earthball but seemed a bit big - any ideas? |

Gerry | About 6-8 inches across & about 4 inches high, "purse" shaped rather than round.

| | | Re: Puffball, but which one? These days anything is possible but with dimensions of 15-20cm in diameter and 10cm tall I would say it was too big for Scleroderma citrinum and think more in terms of Lycoperdon giganteum or Calvatia gigantea as it is now known.

| | | Re: Puffball, but which one? Phillips states that cap of S.citrinum is 2 - 10cm across, so I'd agree with GerryNick2, that your specimen is substantially larger than that + Calvatia gigantea is more likely. |

| | | Re: Puffball, but which one? Many thanks for the suggestions - I'm still puzzled by this one as the texture of the skin just doesn't seem like the giant puffball (even when old), but it does seem too big for common earthball -looking through my books again I'm wondering whether it could be Pestle Puffball - Calvatia excipulformis? |

| | | Re: Puffball, but which one? Don't think it is Calvatia excipulformis can't see any signs of a pedestal. At the end of the day it may just be an oversized Scleroderma citrinum, 6 inches is big but 8 inches is enormous. Found hundreds of them this afternoon in all shapes and sizes the largest was only just over 3 inches (8cm).
