Thanks very much for the information everyone. I've concluded it is the yellow stainer because the water turned yellow and when i scratched the top with my nail it turned yellow within a few seconds also.

sorry to hijack, but found this today and think it looks pretty similar to the volvariella above and the description seems similar too. any ideas? bit of a shaggy specimen!

Hi Beard

This is different to the first photo- the gills are adnate (rather than free in V.gloiocephala) and no traces of a volval sac....

If I hadn't given up on them I'd suggest a Melaleuca, But I have, so I won't.

d'oh! thats one thing i really need to remember, gill attatchment, didnt look at that at all. i thought the bases looked similar but you're right there is remnants of the volva which arent in my specimen. rushed into that one i think.
