| | Am I getting better at this yet? Brick-Tuft-(Hypholoma-Lateritium)
Found growing on a rotting tree, not sure of the type, I think Oak, spore rpint rust brown, cap raging from 10mm to 100mm, stem up to 70mm long and around 5-10mm, mixed woodland, Nov 2009
I am expecting Andreas to pick this up so thanks to you in advance if you are first here..... |

| | | Re: Am I getting better at this yet? I suspect that the dark colouration on the caps is actually the spore print from an overlying cap, which would make the spores a darker brown than the rust colour you suggest. If so the caps are quite pale, almost creamy-white. That would rule out Hypholoma lateritium which has more reddish-brown tones.
Was there a ring on the stem? The specimen cut in half seems to show a ring, although the other stem shown in the photo doesn't show a ring.

| | | Re: Am I getting better at this yet? Browning on the cap is definitly cap colour and not remains of spores from overlapping caps, this is clear as the browning is perfectly central and is like a sunburst effect, yes there is a ring the one where you can't see it was where the stem broke at the point of the ring so it was not clear. Cap is very slightly peelable, but it won't peel right to the centre, about half way before it comes away. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
