This fungus is growing around the base of a willow tree which is fairly old and has some bark detaching from the trunk. I suspected it may be honey fungus, but there seem to be several types of amillaria classified as "honey fungus" and I'm not sure if this is one of them.
It seems to grow from the roots or the base of the trunk.
The tree seems to exhibit many of the symptoms associated with honey fungus - loose bark, early loss of leaves, dead branches, etc, but then it has always had some dead branches, and it seems to be a year when quite a few trees are losing their leaves early.
Any help would be appreciated - thanks,
Neil
ps this is only my second post, so I hope I've done it correctly
