Are you sure it is growing out of plywood ? I can see where the bark of the Birch is peeling back where the fungus has pushed through.

| | | Re: Fungi Id ? Looks more like a domestic/garden plywood/brick/concrete construction to me rather than a tree trunk but I don't doubt your right about the species Neil. (Anyway the man on the spot who presumably captured and described the image should be able to confirm one way or the other).

Neil. | Thanks
Yep It's plywood alright. Have a different fungi growing on plywood in another part of the garden......Judas's ear/jelly ear fungi. Which I believe is edible.

| | | Re: Fungi Id ? I cant help with the fungi but the ply has the look of one i would expect to be faced by a hard wood probably from asia maybe Malaysia, the layers inside the boards tend to be made up of softer woods, its hard to tell but i would guess this is where the mycelium is contained. Pretty amazing to think the hyphae can survive the immense pressure temperature and chemicals used in producing the laminate.

| | | Re: Fungi Id ? It's not surprising really when you consider that Pleurotus ostreatus is being used to clear up contaminated land on a large scale, and early DIY kits showed how to grow P.ostreatus on toilet rolls !
Enjoy your meal Sir.
Neil.

alex | It is exterior ply, so probably does contain hardwood.
I'd though a possibility that, the ply being continuously damp, had been impregnated by airborne spores.
