Mycena

Right, after repeated failures to post this and constantly getting to "Page Not Found" every time I press the "Submit New Thread" button (only on the Fungi Forum for some reason) I am going for one last-ditch attempt.

Is this Mycena pura? Found all by itself in leaf litter on 5th November in a Cotswold Beechwood. Strong smell, definitely NOT "mushroomy" but other than that I can't say what it was. It lingered on my hands for a while so I was walking along sniffing my fingers but still failed to work out what it smelled of...





Edit: Now it's posted I can add that I never considerd M. pura to start with as this solo specimen was much paler than those I have seen before as well as not being part of a small troop.

Any help or suggestions welcome - although I realise it would need microscopy to give e definite ID.

I'd agree with Mycena pura.

I suppose there's an outside chance it could have been Mycena diosma, which starts off smelling of tobacco and then smells of radish. Supposedly the gills are a darker violet colour in that species whereas the gills on yours look quite pale. I've only found it once myself.

I would agree with Ken(it usually best to). Hollow stipe with long fibrils at the base. Gills with inter-veining and cap with umbo all point to M pura. Quite a pale specimen though. I think in M diosma the stem is always darker even though the cap can dry paler.

Thank you! I did ask Himself for an opinion on the smell but he wasn't feeling too good and said he already felt sick without wanting to sniff my toadstools! ("Man 'flu!") Don't think it was tobacco though and I'm not really sure what radishes smell like...

The gills were pale pink, possibly slightly darker than in the photo but no way were they a "darker violet colour". Anyway, I don't find rare stuff.
