| | | Fungus in grass for ID I found this fungus growing in a mown amenity grass area - previously (15+ years ago either grazed garssland or arable field).
I can't get anywhere with this. The cap is very dark - like plain chocolate. Yhe gills appear to be adnexed (to my inexpert eye).
Can anyone offer any pointers please?
TIA

to me it looks like Lyophyllum decastes.
This species usually don't grows solitary, but in groups or even clusters.
best regards,
Andreas

| | | Re: Fungus in grass for ID Andreas,
Thanks. It was part of a single cluster of about 6-8 fruiting bodies. But according to my Roger Phillips (new edition) Lyophyllum decastes grows in open woodland. There are a few young specimen trees in the general vicinity but as far as I know this has always been agricultural or amenity grassland. Nothing like open woodland. Which is why I was having such difficulty. Nothing I could find that might be a candidate appeared to grow in grassland. Is Lyophyllum decastes found in open grassland?
Thanks

clb100 | Hello,
Lyophyllum decastes is found in woods only along roads or paths. I have never ever seen it "in" the forests. But it is often fould along grassy roadsides and I have often found it in the lawn of cemetries or similar places. So to answer you, definitely yes, it grows also in open grassland.
best regards,
Andreas
