| | | Re: Can anyone help id this fungus Hi,
the fotos really don't look too good. That could also be a used handkerchief ...
If I had to guess, I would say it could be a very young Ganoderma applanatum.
best regards,
Andreas

How about the Slime Mould, Enteridium lycoperdon. ?
If it is like hard rubber, Andreas is right.
If it is soft and you can push your finger in, I'm right.
But if it tastes like ice cream, we are both wrong.

| | | Re: Can anyone help id this fungus It's hard like rubber. Is it dangerous for the tree, and if so can anything be done?
Thanks for the advice. |

I wouldn't worry too much, if it is a very large tree it will take a long time to kill the tree, but if it is where the public have access, you will need to obtain the advice of a qualified tree surgeon, so at least if the worst happens, you can say you took reasonable precautions.
There is no 'cure'.
Neil.
EDIT. Beech trees are notorious for dropping large branches without warning especially when under attack so don't leave it too long in getting expert advice.

I've not checked for fungi on the trees yet, perhaps I should do.
