That's about right. I was returning from a mushroom foray about three weeks ago and we drove past an apple tree (russets) very close to the junction of the A24 and the A272 - lots of cars pass by here and have to wait at the traffic lights next to the tree. The tree was absolutely heaving with apples - we took ten carrier bags full and there was five times as much still left on the tree. However, during the entire time we were collecting them there were people in the cars shouting at us, laughing at us and asking us what we were picking. Err...whaddyathink? Figs?

Thousands of people must have driven past there and we were the only ones who got out and collected the apples. They are currently being turned into cider. For most people in the UK, food is something which comes from a supermarket.

After 2 hours at home this mushroom start to smell strongly in unplesant way. I doubt now its edible and even if it is I would not touch it now.

Well maybe in the weekend will pick something that can be eaten.

I looked on many pictures and only thing that could be a match is suillus variegutus.

1. It was growing next to pine and some heathers.
2. It doesn't have a ring.
3. It's sticky.
4. Doesn't produce milky granules
5. It smells in a way that I would not eat it (but not while growing).

On the other hand:
1. its not scaly while most pictures I've seen show him as having scales, while only few other pictures look almost exactly like what I found - one of problems with books is that they show only one variety.
2. Cap is both convex and flat with rounding at very edge (for me its somehow indication of not edible mushrooms - just my observation before you even look under cap) while it is described as only convex.
3. It doesn't change color while description say it might turn slightly blue when cut.


When I get my camera battery will make better pictures as it intrigues me.
I wanna know what is it.
