| | | Very photogenic but .. is it possible to identify these purely from a photograph?
On fallen beech in woodland mainly beech/birch - about 8-10mm tall with cap about 1mm across ...
On the same log as above but about 1.5cm tall and with the cap between 3 and 5mm across ...
I am quite fascinated by these small fungi.

JohnB | Your first fungus is Mycena adscendens but the second one is not This would need microscopy to be sure.
I agree too John, the smaller the fungus the more interesting they are!

I would say not, but there is a plenty of skilled mycologist with a good eye on WAB who may disagree

agree about adscendens; for the second one could M. speirea not be in the frame? it would be helpful to see the gill attachment (and the micro-structure of the cap cuticle) . . .

Chris | Don't know if this is any help but taken from the opposite side. The gills are attached to the stem not free.

JohnB | hi John
unless you can see the very top of the stem you can't actually see how they are attached . . . but thanks for at least posting another image
cheers
Chris

JB | great stuff - yes those gills are certainly decurrent - arcuate is another term you might see used (self-explanatory really)
so I'll stick with my Mycena speirea suggestion, and will await further comments . . .
best
Chris

I will have to start remembering that once I have the "photogenic" bit recorded to then do the rest to aid in identification.
