| | | Milkcap ID Please. Hi.
This looks like a Milk cap to me, but I can not work out what one it is.
Any ideas?
Thanks Dave |

was it growing with Betula (birch)?
if so I would suspect Lactarius torminosus
best wishes
Chris

| | | Re: Milkcap ID Please. As you both know, the other possibility would be L. pubescens but on the basis of the 'rings' on the cap I understand why you both say L. tormenosus.
During the Clumber foray, Pauline mentioned that a characteristic of L. pubescens is a salmon pink 'collar' at the top of the stipe - as shown here. I understood her as saying that it was a distingishing feature between the two species. Perhaps I misunderstood her Mal? Or Pauline if you are reading this?
I have seen several L. pubescens since, all have that 'collar'. I have yet to see L. tormenosus since then to look.

Before being told by Pauline about the collar I would always have distinguished L pubescens as being much paler than L torminosus and having an unzonate cap and usually having a less hairy cap edge.
I have found lots of them in the past but have no photos to prove it
