I`ve got plenty of fungus guides, mainly the readily available ones, but it hasn`t turned me into a mycologist, not even anywhere near. With a few notable exceptions its` very difficult to identify to species, especially from a picture. However; I will hazard a guess at Bolbitius sp (i.e. a species within the Bolbitius genera)and wait to be shot down in flames.
Cheers

| | | Re: Id Please not shooting anyone down - the Bolbitius / Conocybe area looks likely
unfortunately from a fruit-body picture like that there is often not enough to go on - plus when a fruit-body starts to age and desiccate like this one then macro-characters such as whether the species is hygrophanous, gill-colour changes from young to mature, smell etc. can all disappear
keep looking Susie - you're bound to find lots more ; the ideal is several fruit-bodies, at different stages, photographed from various angles . . . . though that is an ideal
best
Chris

| | | Re: Id Please Thanks Pete and Chris for replies...Looks likely to be - the Bolbitius / Conocybe area, well that's good enough for me.
Tis complicated stuff this for a beginner but fascinating all the same.
And thanks for the encouragement to keep looking Chris I braved my first walk in the woods for years yesterday and had a wonderful day. Found lots more like you said, felt like finding treasure! Took lots of photo's, will try and upload later. Hope at least some will be a few of the notable exceptions to id from a picture.
Thanks again
