| | | Fungus or lichen? Very stuck again - is it a fungus or is it a lichen?
Its on a very wet, small fallen branch, but unfortunately I was so busy peering at it that I forget to look at the (deciduous) trees above to note the species.
Help very appreciated........ |

Help very appreciated........ | hi Jenny
of course the question is a bit of a loaded one . . . lichens are classified according to their fungal constituents after all . . .
given that it looks to be doing what it should be doing, and it's on "a very wet, small fallen branch" I would suspect that it is a non-lichenized fungus - lichens requiring more long-term substrates
after that I would need to get the fungus under a microscope to be able to proceed further
best wishes
Chris

I don't think it is, because this appears to show white ostioles in a fungal stroma (i.e. pore-like openings in a flattened fungal 'cushion') plus the surface looks to be hard and relatively smooth rather than made up of small white myxo sporangia; the question is whether this cushion is lichenised - and I suspect it isn't . . . it's rather reminiscent of Diatrype stigma - but those white ostioles
cheers

| | | Re: Fungus or lichen? Yes, I should have said in my first post that the surface the white ostioles are in was hard, black and shiny. Now it has dried it is cracking and going very dark greenish-brown. Some of it appears to extend under the bark where it is flaking off.
I wasn't sure when it was fresh whether the tiny 'mushrooms' were connected or a different species but they've shriveled out of existence now...... |
